In addition to regular weekly lessons, Rob also provides professional help to vocalists who are preparing for auditions or talent competitions. This would be a separate short term arrangement suited to the specific needs of the vocalist and worked around Rob´s regular lesson schedule.
Instructor: Rob Keiter
Main Objective: Helping vocalists develop their vocals skills while also teaching them how to accompany themselves on the keyboard without the need of an accompanist. Students will be able to pick the music of their choosing and then be taught the music theory necessary to learn songs and perform reading modern lead sheets from fake books which contain lyric, melody and chord charts. Students do not need present piano skills in order to learn how to effectively play the piano in the specific role of accompanying themselves.
Instructor's Credentials:
- BA in Music Performance from the University of Texas in Arlington
- 35 years professional music experience in singing, playing trombone and piano
- 30 years experience in providing individual and group instruction on the middle school, high school and college level in addition to directing music ministries where the instructor led both instrumental and vocal groups.
- The instructor has a CD on ITunes entitled, "Charleston Christmas" and has just finished his first major jazz vocal project entitled, "The Glory of Love" which includes some of the top jazz musicians on both the East and West coast and features multiple Grammy award winner, Randy Brecker, playing trumpet and flugelhorn on four of the twelve songs. The project is scheduled to be released spring 2009.
- Currently the instructor is the music director/worship leader at Pierpont Baptist Church where he leads the music team. During evenings the instructor sings and accompanies himself in different restaurants and venues in the Charleston area as well as performing with his own rhythm section singing jazz as well as a variety of music styles.
- A life long passion for performing music and training musicians.
- Rob is an active member of the National Music Teachers Association, the SC Music Teachers Association and the Charleston Music Teachers Association.
Benefits of Instruction:
- Students will learn music theory including scales, chords, chord extensions and voicings, progressions, tempo, meter, and feel. This will be specifically applied in training them to perform without the need of another accompanist.
- Students will be able to learn songs on their own and then have the life long thrill of perform for themselves, their family and friends, or if their gifting and motivation is such they can take this to the level of actually playing professionally and earning money.
- Students will be able to accompany other vocalists as a result of their training.
- Students will be given individualized training. Each student will be given an assessment to determine their current music knowledge, skill, and experience. Instruction will be tailored to their individual level.
- Students will be able to pick the music of their choice and this will be used in addition to resources that the instructor will provide as well as materials that will be purchased by the student for music theory training.
- Students will have an opportunity to perform for their family and friends as a recital will be scheduled to take place Spring, 2009.
- Students will be helped not only in their ability to accompany themselves but in overall music feel as well as vocal styling and phrasing.
- Students will become better overall musicians which will be of benefit to them in every music situation they are involved in.
Practical Information:
- Lessons are $25.00/half hour and will be take place weekly and be paid in advance monthly at the first lesson of the month.
- Lessons will be taught at the instructor's house at a convenient location in the Belle Hall subdivision in Mt Pleasant located off of the I-526 Long Point exit.
- Lessons will be taught in half hour blocks - Mondays and Tuesdays from 2-9pm, Wednesdays 2-5pm, and Thursdays from 2-9pm.
- The instructor is only taking 40 students. Once all the spaces have been filled, students desiring instruction will be placed on a waiting list.
- Lessons will begin the week of Monday September 28th.
